Kiyomi is the only child of Gou Ryuuji and Yugito Nii, the first jhinchuriki of the Two-Tails. Fearing that the stress of giving birth would break the seal containing the Two-Tails, the Fourth Kazekage arranged Kiyomi's parents to go to a top-secret location on the outskirts of the village guarded by Anbu, with the midwives helping Yugito in delivering her child while Gou and the the Kazekage would keep the seal in place.
Kiyomi was soon born on the late night of November 11th, but due to the tremendous deal on childbirth, Matatabi had eventually broken the seal and escaped. Yugito shortly passed away afterwards, from both the ordeal of a Bijuu extraction and childbirth. But as a result of Matatabi's kind and considerate attitude, the tailed beast didn't put up a fight and was sealed into Kiyomi at the request of the Kazekage.
Gou didn't realize it at the time, but the Kazekage had different plans for Kiyomi. He didn't just seal the beast into Kiyomi to stop a rampage on the village, but so he could use her as a weapon of war like he did with Gaara due to the heavy cuts of Sunagakures budget. But seeing as she wasn't 'created' for war purpose, Gou never wanted her to become a ninja nor learn any techniques, so she would be safe. But because Yugito was a ninja of the Hidden Cloud, the Kages of the two villages would often meet up and fight over who she belonged to, the Sand or the Cloud, but Gou would always intervene and kept her safe.
Kiyomi was raised alone by her father, as he kept her away from people in the Ryuuji Clan building and outside. He thought it would be best for her, seeing how the village treated Gaara. She never had interaction with anyone else, and rarely saw her cousins. Her father was about the only person she ever saw. She would only see other members of the clan inside the Ryuuji building, only passing them by. Her grandparents did visit her occasionally to take care of her whenever Gou was out.
Kiyomi was home schooled by her father and taught basic self defense if she ever needed it. She would become quite lonely as she watch other children play from her window, so she would often occupy herself with reading many books. She was also very interested in playing the shamisen. It kept her quite busy and filled the quite and empty space of her house with beautiful rhythms.
One night when Kiyomi was eight years old, she was sitting her room reading when all of the sudden the window smashed open and ninjas flew into her room. They all went for Kiyomi, but Gou had heard the smashing of the windows and raced into her room. Her fought most of them off, but there were too many for him to handle, so when his back was turned, a ninja sliced his neck, beheading him, killing him instantly, right in front of Kiyomi’s eyes. Seeing this all happen before her, she instantly went on a rampage, turning into the two tails, but only her one tail stage. She killed all of the ninjas almost instantly. One thing she can vividly remember about that night was that those were Konaha ninja that killed her father. Of course only being eight, she soon passed out from to the power of Matatabi overwhelming her. Yugito’s younger brother, Shee, soon heard about this news, and despite what Gou had planned for her, to never see her relatives or learn to be a ninja, Shee went to the Sand Village to see his niece. Once Shee arrived, he introduced himself to Kiyomi, mentioning that he was Yugitos younger brother. Shee had learnt many techniques for Matatabi, for if one day Yugito lost control, he’d be able to stop her. He became close to Kiyomi, helping her through her depression and anxiety about her fathers death. He trained her every day, fitting all a shinobi would learn in a academy and onwards into a few years. Once she had mastered basic ninja qualities, he began to teach her to use Matatabis influence to her advantage, teaching her all sorts of jutsus. Finally, at age twelve, the Chuunin Exams had come around. She was assigned to the Sand Siblings team with exceptions, making them a four man squad. Following the orders to attack the Leaf Village once they were in the Chuunin Exams.
Kiyomi is a observant and responsible person, known for her serious and unyielding demeanor and impressive intelligence - albeit also known for her perfectionistic tendencies and often blunt delivery. She is cynical, passive aggressive, quick witted, and sophisticated, while also being loyal, fair, and rational. Despite her always cool and collected demeanor even when under pressure, she actually has quite the temper, but will never openly display or admit it.
Kiyomi gained confidence in herself through hard work, making her a courageous, proud and wise kunoichi. Most people know her as being a busy, hardworking, and efficient individual whose focus and determination is both respected and feared. Self sufficient, she can appear stand-offish at times, people often deeming her treacherous and cunning. Which wouldn’t be an entirely false statement, seeing shes known for her strategic and calculating tactics.
When she wants something it isn't hard for anyone to imagine her succeeding, she knows how to manipulate people and situations to produce the most favorable outcome and often times is seen as being several steps ahead of everyone else, a trait which is both a help and hindrance in her personal and professional life. She can be quite stubborn at times, but will never admit it. Kiyomi will fight just about anybody, even if she knows that there's no way she can beat them.
She is a practical and impressive tactician with a very sharp wit and indomitable instincts - which she follows to the letter. She isn't afraid to make a retreat if it means getting to have a second or third go at the problem. During missions, Kiyomi is often looked to for opinions and leadership. While she does hold herself with a good deal of professionalism and is good at executing orders as they are given, she is not afraid to question methods and offer better alternatives should she find some. Kiyomi will not hesitate to defend the innocent and the weak and does not put up with bullshit well, having a very good radar to detect it (and right hook to snuff it out). Also, it is said that she is firm, decisive, and thoughtful of her team-mates.
Proving to be a very difficult woman to get close to. Not only because of her passive persona. But also under the impression of proving their trustworthy intentions, either through demonstrating skill or simple first confrontation. Naturally, they would be required to pass an inspection directed by an otherworldly force. Common downside to Kiyomis` behavior as a Jinchuuriki is the reluctance to welcome a helping hand even if the situation turns dire for her. Although she will not object to someone coming at aid, there is a chance for a small edge of bitterness afterward. Stated previously, ’ Ninja with power are blessed for reason, to defend those who cannot. ’ In some cases, it would be taken as an insult, deeming her weak or helpless in a sense.
Which also ties into a more personal belief. The small distrust of men, for example. There are several theories leading as to why, yet the underlying reasons seem to branch into a discrete choice. Men have a sense of entitlement for every purpose that women should also be permitted in life, highly valued and upheld. However, she will not deny the strength of another biased on gender alone.
Kiyomi can be extremely misunderstood. She is all about intensity and contradictions. She likes to be aware of a situation and always know what's going on, figuring this out with her probing mind, on the other hand, she is interested in the occult, the paranormal, conspiracy theories and other types of similar unknown mysteries. She is very capable of hiding her true feelings and motivations, she sometimes has ulterior motives or a hidden agenda.
In spite of her ambitious nature and her jealous tendencies, Kiyomi can be a wonderful friend and lover. One of the reasons for this is that she is so passionate and loyal in her feelings. You never have to wonder where you stand with Kiyomi, you will always know although she may not be verbal in what she says. However, you do have to overlook some of her obsessions and possessiveness in order to maintain a healthy friendship or romance with her. Relationships with Kiyomi can be complicated, just like the her, her relationships are a series of extremes, she can even be downright moody for no apparent reason. Kiyomi can be known for her possessiveness and jealousy but on the other hand, she is extremely loyal and protective of those close to her.
Kiyomi has an excellent memory and combined with an inability to let things go, she can hold a grudge against someone who did her or anyone she knows harm forever, in fact Kiyomi rarely if never forgives and forgets. She will even go as far as get vengeance on the person. On the other hand, she will always remember a kind gesture forever and repay it. Any kind selfless gesture done to her will gain trust and respect which is extremely important to her in any relationship, either romantic or not. The best advice is to be honest with Kiyomi and in return, you will gain an amazing friend you will never forget and who will be loyal to you and never make false promises. Her truthful and shocking blunt sense of humor if different than that of any other person and Kiyomi makes an amazing, powerful interesting friend that can always be trusted.
Kiyomi has fair ivory skin, clear of blemishes. Her hair is a silky dark coffee brown colour and it's also naturally straight and smooth, a trait she inherited from her father. Her eyes are deep set and possesses the Shinshihaigan like the rest of her clan. She has lanky looking limbs, despite being shorter than average until she's in her 20's. Her Bijuu Seal is on her back in between her shoulder blades. Her seal is considerably large and elaborate, crawling over her skin in an inked, almost webbed pattern. Sensitive to enhanced emotions, spiked chakra levels, even a faintest touch.
Kurei's War attire is notable simple compared to her usual wardrobe. She has now trimmed back her bangs to better settle under her pale tan bandanna with her hitai-ate attached, which is now back atop her head, Kurei has returned to the short, angular blunt cut she had back during the timeskip. Still sporting her signature orange, Kurei wears a full body uniform in the color under a pale tan Sunagakure flack jacket, no pockets, with shoulder guards. Around her right leg is the standard ninja off-navy thigh pouch with bandages. More bandages wrap the bottoms of her pants legs closed and disappear under her pale tan standard issue ninja shoes. Under her long sleeves she has two needle-vial holsters which run up the length of her arms and stop just under her shoulders. The vials hold a variety of poisons for quick injection on the battle field. She has a large supply pouch attached to a belt under the flack jacket.
Physical Prowess and Chakra Control
One of Kurei's defining battle-traits is her sheer speed. She was very fast with her attacks, such that Waya could not follow her actions in the Forest of Death until he had reawakened his Renshagan. Her speed is so tremendous that she was able to quickly close the gap between Sokuji and Iki to take their summoning scrolls from them before either realized what had happened. Exploiting the Body Flicker Technique to its fullest, Kurei can move at almost undetectable speeds, leaving no trace of either her presence or her destination. In battle, her speed has been shown to allow her to seamlessly dodge barrages of projectiles from her enemy and likewise outpace them.
Kure has shown extremely quick reflexes, such as when she quickly grabbed Kankuro and Gaara and moved to a safe location after Kankuro's puppets caused the aquifer they were standing around to collapse. Her speed and reflexes increase to incredible levels using her Speed of Endless Light Seal, fashioned after observing Sakura and Tsunade's Strength of a Hundred Seal. During Part II, by utilizing this technique, she makes it appear as though a massive volley of weapons were phasing through her body while standing still, when Kurei was merely making use of her heightened reflexes to dodge around them at extraordinary speeds.
Resilience and Endurance
As she would fight mainly with senbon from a distance during Part I, Kurei showed dangerous accuracy, able to effectively hit any key body points of her choosing to instantly kill or sedate a target. As shown in a few circumstances Kurei is also quite skilled with chakra control, such as being able to transfer chakra to others, create almost undetectable needles from chakra, and the ability to wield her chakra with such stringent control that she dose not often overtax her supply. Ninjutsu skill, able to effectively create her own branch of ninja art at an early age and continue to develope it's potency by assmiliating and improving upon existing techniques.
As is typical of the Shuhou Clan, Kurei naturally possesses exceptionally large amounts, and strong levels, of both chakra and stamina. Kurei excels in the techniques of her clan's secondary branch, which are primarily focused around stealth techniques such as (insert name) Technique, a technique predominantly used for reconnaissance and espionage, or with sensory techniques like the Six Paths of the Mind, used to identify, sense, and momentarily manipulate individuals' emotions through their chakra. As she did with the young Amegakure child Saiyuri in Part II to cox the girl to reveal the coordinates of Taba's mother. Kurei manipulated Saiyuri's chakra to match that of Taba's so the girl would understand the situation, convincing her to help them.
By Part II, Kurei's control also allows her to perform various techniques with few to no hand seals, leaving little time for enemies to react.
Kurei is sensor-type ninja, allowing her to sense the chakra of others even from extended distances, determine whether or not a specific individual is among a crowd, ascertain numbers of individuals approaching her along with species and/or special qualities, and determine the size and potency of a target's chakra reserve. As well as allowing her to discern the similarity between chakra signatures belonging to close relatives such as Yoko and her brother, Aoki, as well as to distinguish chakra from different populations. Kurei can divine if an enemy is using a clone technique, and indicate if someone, including herself, is trapped in genjutsu. She can, similarly, conceal her own chakra from others. However, doing so will render her unable to use chakra, thus disabling her sensing technique.
Kurei started showing signs as early as age five when she noted the quick fluctuation in her brothers chakra after lying about breaking her toys. In the battle to defend the Wind Temple, Kurei could sense that something was coming, which were a possessed Fuun and Kimakase's Band. She often uses her sensory abilities to find and track her targets in order to manipulate them into a trap or area for ambush.
Kurei is well versed in a variety of ninjutsu types. Even as a young genin, Kurei used her formidable intelligence to build herself a personal arsenal of Toxic Ninja Art techniques, a Ninja Art which she founded through her work with poisons. As such, she is noted for being a quick study and for being able to break down the construction of a ninjutsu technique after simple observation. She can then rely this information to allies to aid them in battle. After having seen Gaara use his Desert Suspension, Kurei is able to create her Oasis Suspension. She is highly skilled in stealth, tracking, and reconnaissance, becoming proficient at a young age in using the Hiding with Camouflage Technique . Dr. Yamawaki noted that Kurei is highly specialized when it comes to trap and ambush tactics. This is most likely due to her sensei's inclinations when teaching, as well as her sensory perception, and need to avoid long periods of physical combat.
Toxic Ninja Art
Kurei most distinguishing ability are her various Toxic Ninja Art techniques. She has gained much fame for his usage of its various abilities, earning her worldwide recognition as The Poison Barb of the Sand (する の どく イばら ; lit. The Poison Barb of the Sand). Many rely on injection into the victim, which with Kurei's level of control can be done without detection on most occasions, and subsequently focus on Kurei manipulation them from afar. She chooses to disable rather than kill when it is at all possible, inducing temporary loss of control over the nervous system or educing mild hallucinations. By the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kurei shows a great proficiency and mastery over her art, to the point where she can force the chemicals within various toxic substances to go dormant or become active, even from great distances. As well as being able to use her poisons to counter foreign matter as she can fluctuate her chakra so as to act like a magnet. According to Dr. Yamawaki, her use of these techniques has improved greatly.
Kurei often favors pairing her Toxic Ninja Art with her various sensory-barrier techniques in order to ensure she does not hit friend rather than foe. One such combo, aptly named Barrier: Toxic Shield, allows Kurei to detect and melt invading objects with a barrier consisting of thousands of tiny poison droplets. Another favored technique is her Toxic Ninja Art: Multi-Headed Hydra Technique. Once the technique has been used to summon the primary hydra head, Kurei can summon more heads as she pleases -up to ten- and fight with each either intamdum or separately.
Her injestion of poisons as well as her work with Toxic Ninja Art techniques, paired with her advanced sensory abilities has given Kurei a unique six sense to detect poison in her immediate area. She was able to identify the poison in the tea served to herself and the Sand Siblings on a political mission to the Porcelain Village. Kurei has even been seen spitting poison form her mouth, elongating her nail with poison paint, and using the sweat glands in her hand as a way to transfer toxins to her targets.
Application of poison to weapons is a secondary usage, though not her preferred method of combat. Usually forging her weapons from chakra where she can easily apply her toxic art, Kurei has been known to manipulate kunai and other smaller weaponry in large quantities when covered with her poison, poison infused blood, or toxic spit. Under her sleeves she has wrist mounted holsters to fire poisoned senbon.
During the Chunin exams, Kurei was shown able to summon various scoripons onto the battlefield. She and her teammates, Hin and Taba, use their respective summons in Formation Delta. Like her teammates summons, a few of her scorpions also grow throughout the series and get large enough to ride. She can also summon Hakusa to aid her by quickly carry her, and others, through terrain.
As of the Timeskip, Kurei also made an additional summoning contract which allows her to summon desert kangaroo rats to track water for the Mizugame Ryodan. Kurei is able to track the kangaroo rats thanks to her sensory skills which allowing her to get the coordinate of the groundwater before stepping foot into the field.
Kurei has shown to possess a great level of intelligence and perception, graduation at the top of her class while enrolled in the academy alongside Waya and Miaka. Kurei is very keen-minded, as she has been shown to have great observational and analytical abilities, capable of quickly determining a way around an opponent's technique or strategy. As shown in her applied techniques test when she is able to make her way out of the the sand labarinth by tracking the shadow of the wind turbines. Realizing that anything above the top of the maze was not cloaked in genjutsu. Likewise is very knowledgeable in various ninjutsu techniques, able to quickly recognize and figure out how to counter them. Kurei possesses a very detailed knowledge of human physiology, thanks to Dr. Yamawaki's training. Her knowledge is great enough that she can disable an opponent with acupuncture by hitting a precise point on the body with a senbon, to cause immediate death or a temporary appearance of such.
Kurei is noted to be very persuasive speaker, capable of capturing and holding others attention with her warm charisma and shrewd way with words. While still a young child, Kurei showed a great, unclouded understanding of the world and a deeply insightful nature. She also demonstrated being a capable teacher, evident when Gaara aknowledges the growth of several Mizugame Ryodan genin under Kurei's tutelage. She is able to gauge when someone is lying by simple tells and ticks, generally when forcing someone to keep eye contact or reading fluctuations in chakra. She is known for her ability to mediate in tense situations and be an unbiased judge.
She is also shown knowledgeable in herbal remedies, regularly preparing them for her team to help further their training.
Part l (Pre-Shippuden)
For years, Sunagakure suffered a series of budget cuts by the daimyō of the Land of Wind, weakening the village and thus re-routing ninja missions to Konoha. Kurei's clan, the Shuhou , was one of the Triad Clans of Sunagakure and a main financial supporter of the village. Even with their backing, Sunagakure barely scrapped by. They were forced to stretched their ninja thin working to find and execute missions and many ninja went on double the amount of mission they could handle, further stretching the Sunagakure ninja all the thinner. Kurei's graduating class was a group of unlucky, and eventually bitter, genin who were tossed into the harsh shinobi life to learn on the job in order to grab any money they could for the village. Many of these young ninja went on bounty hunts or after nuknin. It was a decidedly rough and depressing time for the village which eventually left them open to easy manipulation but outside sources. After realizing the scope of devastation to the Shuhou Clan, having lost a huge number of the family to injuries and worse, Kurei is surprised and proud by how quickly her clan bounces back. Allying with various clans in Konoha as well as redirecting funds from their sister branch to help settle Sunagakure's finances. It is a long and painful succession of funerals and restoration plans as Sunagakure picks up the pieces in order to forged ahead.
Kurei made her debut during the Chūnin Exams. When Naruto mouthed off, Kurei and her team unabashedly provoked a few wound up genin to further escalate the tension. Disappointed that the proctors suffused the agitated atmosphere, Kurei settles back on her perch and awaits further instruction. During the first phase, the written portion of the exam, Kurei is one of the few examinees that is able to answer the questions without cheating. When Hin send his Camouflaged Cloth roll to Kurei, she quickly replicated the answers which are then passed to their third teammate, Taba. Being to stubborn and having a job to do, Kurei and her team stay in their seats to wait out the final question and, after Naruto's outburst, they pass the first phase.
During the second phase, Kurei and her team spent the majority of their time setting traps and ambushing teams for the sake of causing chaos. Early on team 13 was attacked, their trap circumvented, by a group of Kusagakure ninja and they were thrown into a fierce battle. Kurei and Taba, using the Hiding in Camouflague Technique, and Hin using his Camouflague Cloth Techniques, disappeared from view and it is this advantage which allowed for a derisive victory against their nine opponents. Kurei uses her sensory perception periodically to map out where the other Suna teams are and is surprised when she can't find the Sand Siblings, wondering if they had somehow been defeated, only to find them at the meeting point shortly after making the statement. When she spies a group of Ame genin surrounding Team 15, Kurei makes use of her hidden needle launchers and, even from her substantial distance, is able to knock Gidan's sword off target, saving An's life.
When Gidan turns his attention to Kurei she sends a huge spray of poison from her mouth in a state of panic. This begins to melt Gidan's face mask as well as the skin of his forehead and shoulders where the poison splattered. The Ame genin abandon the rest of genin in favor of killing Kurei. Although Hin and Taba do their best to get at the retreating Ame genin, both are reduced to pace around the Water Blockade Technique, and Kurei is on her own. Despite his physical prowess, Kurei proves to be too fast for the Ame genin. This gives Waya and Maika, the other two members of Team 15, time to circle around the blockade and come to Kurei's rescue. Maika goes one on one with Gidan while Waya heals Kurei as she removes the Ame ninja holding up the blockade so Hin, Taba, and An can get into the fight. Once healed, Kurei retreats to the trees to provide cover fire for her team, setting into Formation Alpha as Maika finishes Gidan off by decapitation. Once the remaining Ame ninja flee, Team 13 and Team 15 part ways, but not before Kurei gives Waya one of their many Heaven Scrolls.
While moving about the forest, and being careful to avoid any more fighting, Kurei senses a strong, disturbing chakra -turning out to be Sasuke's curse seal- and immediately leads her teammates away quickly. Kurei grows tiered from overusing her Clan's sensory techniques and, deactivating it to get some rest, misses an ambush which leads to Taba being severely injured. After getting away they call it quits, job completed hours again, and open one of their scrolls, leading them to be rendered unconscious by their sensei and whisked away to be healed.
A month later, Kurei is in a rather small room, cramped with other Suna ninja of all ranks, being shown maps and being instructed with their positions and expectations. Team 13 and Team 15 infiltrate the stands as civilians and watched the fights before the Konoha Crush began. After learning the truth about their Kazekage, both teams rush to find their respective sensei's and retreat back to the village, abandoning the invasion plan. They decide to catch up with the Sand Siblings. Kurei notices the huge surge of chakra as Gaara and Naruto begin to fight and is drawn like a moth to the flame in order to watch the fight. They meet Temari who warns them against getting involved before she goes after Kankuro. After Naruto defeats Gaara, all the Suna ninja hurry back to their home village to regroup and heal.
Mizugame Ryodan Introduction Arc
In Naruto's Footsteps: The Friends' Paths
In the anime, shortly after Gaara became Kazekage, Sunagakure deciding to host an early Chūnin Exams supported by Konoha. Team 13 begins to discuss their joining the exams and are able to convince most of the Mizugame Ryodan genin to likewise join. Kurei helps them form adequately balanced teams and they all begin to train as a group. Seeing their determination and knowing the boost it would be to the Ryodan, Hideri, gives them a paid leave to train until it's time for the exams. Kurei goes a little overboard setting up a strict and jam packed training schedule for her fellow genin. Though there are complaints, everyone agrees that, at the end, they were far better prepared than they would have expected. Gaara compliments Kurei on her ability to successfully teach such a varying group of individuals, earning a light blush from Kurei and cheers from her 'students'.
Upon entering the exams, Kurei and her teammates were randomly split into different rooms to take the written test. She was place in room 9 with Waya and Butsuri. On a monitor, Shikamaru, as proctor, explained that everyone only needs to answer one question on the test each with different worth, but their team's combined score must equal exactly 100 points to pass. Similarly to the first chunin exams, Hin used his Camouflague Cloth Technique to make sure their score would be even. Waya and Butsuri gave thumbs up, which she returned, signaling they believed they had also passed the written test. After time was up, Shikamaru reveals a bonus question asking the genin what team member they would sacrifice as a decoy with the answer having to be unanimous, and the person picked being disqualified. Kurei saw through the deception and knew not to answer, delivering the news to Hin who delivered it to Taba. Her team ultimately passed the first round. However, a preliminary round was issued to lessen the many participants there were, which involved a race to Sunagakure where only the first 30 teams to arrive at the destination would qualify for the second exam.
Ultimately, her team were among the first 30 teams to make it. The following night, as all the genin were ready to eat dinner, everyone grew nervous about the overly-sweaty Burami ruining the food, which caused the genin to quickly try to stop him, resulting in Neji using the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven and accidentally destroying the food. As tension grew between everyone over the recent event, an all-out brawl began. Eventually everyone lost their desire to fight when Fū arrived with her optimistic ways. The following day, the second exam began. Like the last exam in Konoha, the teams were each given either a Heaven or Earth scroll and were required to within three days to obtain a matching set. They were then required to bring the set to the main building in the center of Demon Desert.
Water Depletion Arc
Kurei is stressed when a report on the water towers comes in announcing the water level to be far below the expected level. She runs the report by Gaara and asks his opinion. He sends out a squad to check the towers and they find a suspicious patch on each of the towers, leading the Kazekage to believe someone has been siphoning water. Throughout the arc the higher ups in the Mizugame Ryodan, Kurei included, and Gaara work to organize forces to replenish and protect the water towers throughout the night while a battle is ignited in the heart of Sunagakure. During the chaos, Kurei and two genin are taken captive and interrogated by the band wanting to know where the main aquifer that feeds the sub aqueducts is. Kurei refuses to say anything. The arc ends with the death of the leaders by Kurei's hand and her falling unconscious from overexertion. Gaara elects to carry her to the hospital upon finding her. When she awakens, she is surprised to find many people now know her name and is moved by the cards and letter she received while comatose.
Kazekage's Swearing In Arc
Part ll (Shippuden)
Kazekage Rescue Mission
Sakura takes Narutofor a tour of Konoha to reacquaint him with the village. They run into Shikamaru escorting Temari from the village, the two working together in anticipation of the next Chūnin Exams. Sakura asks about Kurei thinking she was coming to look over the poisons Konoha has acquired recently. Temari informs her that Kurei was sent out on an urgent mission and hands over a scroll for Sakura to deliver to Tsunade.
In Sunagakure, the Suna council discusses Gaara's kidnapping. Elsewhere, Kurei is in the middle of a battle when she catches a tear running down her cheek. Thinking it an effect from the physical blow she took she writes it off and activates her Toxic Release: Multi-Headed Hydra Techinque to finish off her opponents. Just as Kurei is looking over a map to find her next target area three Sunagakure Anbu arrive and inform Kurei that Gaara has been killed and taken by the Akatsuki. Enraged and trying to deny the truth, Kurei leaves her mission unfinished and rushes back to the village, Anbu close behind.
As the Sunagakure ninja disapate after celebrating Gaara's revival and Gaara is taken into the village to rest, Kurei arrives at the village entrance visibly shaken and exhausted, having run for a many hours straight to get back home. She mistaken the tears of joy at Gaara's revival for horrible tears of joy that the jinchuriki is gone. Snapping at a very startled group of genin she then flees with her stomach in knots. Kurei beats a swift path across the roof tops to the Kazekage office intending to hide and wallow in her sorrow. As she sits on a metal wall covering, near tears and mourning all the things she had wanted to share with Gaara, the Kazekage appears at the window and warns her that the metal is about to give way. This, prompting a startled cry from the Kunoichi, who barely has time to dive into the office window before the metal does, indeed, gave way. Kurei pauses, crouched and staring up at Gaara until, shakily, she is able to rise to her feet and make a hurried explanation. Temari, who comes into the room, fills Kurei in on what happened, giving her time to calm down.
Pain's Assault Arc
Kurei arrives in Konoha in order to met with her aunt, Meiousei, leader of the Konohagakure branch of her clan, to negotiate terms Tenousei sent with her. Kurei inquires about the Kami no Kado and how many gates her aunt got through, trying to get some extra information before going through her own gate challenge, which Meiousei puzzles out eventually. Their discussions take place as the Six Paths of Pain arrive. Konoha's forces begin to mobilize, engaging the Six Paths of Pain in battle and protecting the fleeing villagers from harm.
Kurei dives right in, barking orders at her younger cousins to provide chakra to those fighting the Paths of Pain as the adults launch into the fray. Kurei moves around collecting and helping citizens, specifically children, and helping them move toward shelter. She summons her Scorpions to search for anyone left behind or children who have gotten scared and hidden. Kurei and Ritsumei see a stray attack smack into a large building with threatens to fall onto a group of academy students. Kurei summons the scorpion Tsumamu while Ritsumei calls on her Lion summon Daisan-Ousama who catch the building on their backs while the Shuhou girls use the Clan's Chakra Molding: Extra Hands to grab and protect each child and pull them to safety. Ritsume and Daisan-Ousama take the children to where the rest of the citizens are being evacuated as Kurei and Tsumamu move off to continue the search.
Kurei becomes much faster and more accurate with Katsuyu on board once she is summoned and divided across the village. Between locating children and other citizens she is seen clearing out debris and getting injured shinobi out of harms way while providing impromptu medical attention.
When the Deva Path uses its Shinra Tensei to destroy Konoha, even being on the outer most part of the attack, Kurei is picked up, tossed, and slammed into a concrete slab hard enough to cause instantaneous death. Her summons take too much damage from the blast and poof away while crying out her name.
Eventually the Deva Path is defeated and Naruto rushes to Nagato's location. The villagers are informed of Naruto's victory, meanwhile, Ritsume rushes to the fallen Kurei, being led by Daisan-Ousama, with a few other Shuhou members. The lion summon has to smack Ritsume to get her to accept her cousin's death and offers to carry her off so they can prepare to transfer the body back to Suna. One of the other Shuhou girls mentions how horrible it will be to tell Sunagakure, specifically Temari and the Kazekage, of Kurei's death. In silence the group begins to move away.
To help Naruto bring peace to the world, Nagato revives everyone that died during his invasion of Konoha. Ritsume manages to tearfully finish a touching speech over Kurei's body when said women mentions Ritsume is going to break her hand she is holding it so tight, nearly giving the Shuhou ninja a collective heart attack. A joyous uproar starts from the clan members and each offer Kurei a bit of their chakra so she can heal and stand on her own.
Later, Kurei is seen wondering around, surrounded by a lively group of academy children she saved earlier before she ushers them off as to reach Sakura and Naruto.
Five Kage Summit Arc
Kurei keeps all opinions to herself as Sakura's friends decide on Sasuke's fate. Knowing, as she's not form Konohagakure and isn't a true part of Sakura's group, she has no where to stand. Merely, Kurei stays close to provide support as the decision forms. Internally, Kurei believes execution is the best course of action as Sasuke has caused far too much damage to allies and loved ones to be allowed to roam free.
Kurei departs from Konoha withSakura,Sai, Kiba, and Lee, off to find and speak with Naruto. She is eager to see Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro.Once they arrive at Naruto's location and the Sand Siblings approch, Kurei gravitates over to Temari and gives her a quick one armed hug, muttering softly how good it is to see her before locking eyes on Gaara.
As Gaara walks past Kurei he pauses to look at her, noting a change in her eyes. He gives her a small, welcoming nod and says that it is time for them all to go home. To which Kurei responds by taking Gaara's hands and gently squeezing them. Kurei, much to Gaara's mystification, looks at him with such understanding he feels a pang of guilt followed by confusion. She explains what happened during the invasion by Pain, giving everyone pause and leaving the Suna ninja to walk along in silence.

The Last: Naruto the Movie
Main article: The Last: Naruto the Movie Kurei was seen with the Sand Siblings defending their village from the falling meteors. She was last seen at Naruto and Hinata's wedding with Gaara as her date.
After the Kage meeting and returning home, Kurei realized she wasn't feeling quite right. Gaara carefully picked her up and hot footed it to the hospital, both hoping for the best yet fearing for the worst. Family and friends gather in a waiting area and begin to exchange stories. There is a cry from the room Kurei and Gaara are in which startles those gathered. Toge, Kurei's mother, announces that Kurei is, in fact, pregnant. After everyone calms down some Toge then shocks the crowed with the news that Gaara and Kurei are expecting triplets.

- In those three years before shippuden, Kiyomi takes on a variety of solo missions and team missions without a set squad, mostly caravan detail and tracking suspicious individuals, in a push to work herself higher in the ranks of the Suna Military and earn respect from the villagers.
- Kiyomi owns two cats, both of which are female:

- In order to prevent the jinchūriki from turning traitor, it is tradition for the host to be selected from the family of the village's own Kage. - (to Gaara about Temari and Kankuro) "They are as much my family as they are yours, now. Is that alright?"
- (to Kankuro to his inquiery of the Mizugame Ryodan) "As I understand it, you can not stand a day without adventure. I suppose that is why you think it will be fun to come along with us. Heh, we shall see how that pans out for you when it is all said and done."
- (to Dr. Yamawaki - in hospital) "I hate this place. It is cold and bland and I miss having my own room. I suppose you are okay though, but I hear what the other doctors say. I know I will...a-am I going to die?"
- (to herself) "Oh? So it is going to be one of those days. Great."
- (to Hin about Gaara) "Such a beautiful shade of blue, his eyes. Yet, they're so lonely, even surrounded by people as he is..."
- (to Temari about Gaara) "It is far simpler than even that, Temari. It is easy and comfortable to be with him. He demands little of me and I of him. Yet, we both fulfill a role to the other we did not even realize we so desperately needed. I love him and that is as 'stupid simple' as it gets. Speaking of, how is it going with Shikamaru, hm?"
- (to Dr. Yamawaki - in hospital) "You gave me the strength to live on. None of that sappy stuff about prevailing love and junk. You were here. You yelled at me, teased me, berated me, but you stayed here. Always at my side. You never left me alone even when I tried to push you away. Dr. Yamawaki, you became my anchor simple because you exist as something I have never had and will never be able to name."
- (to the vulgar Renmaru) "I will melt that tongue right out of your head if you insist on using it further."
- (to Gaara) "It really does make you think, hu? How short life truly is, how fragile. Even more, it makes you realize you can not spend all your time being afraid of what might happen and forget to take the chances on what could happen."
- (To Gaara before his swearing in as Kazekage) "Hm, see, this is where we disagree. To me, Gaara is Gaara. You are who you are right now, right at this second. Not who you were when you were five or twelve. Just right now, the man standing right here, that is who you are to me."
